Vice President Kamala Harris raised a staggering $361 million in August, her campaign announced Friday morning, touting it as “the largest fundraising effort of the 2024 election cycle.”
The Democratic presidential candidate's fundraising total, Donald Trump's campaign announced on Wednesday, is nearly triple the $130 million the former president raised last month.
Harris has enjoyed a surge in fundraising in the roughly seven weeks since taking over from President Biden as the top 2024 Democratic candidate.

The vice presidential campaign highlighted that Harris has raised more than $615 million since Biden ended his reelection campaign in a high-profile announcement and announced his endorsement of his running mate.
The Harris campaign also boasted that August's fundraising total was the “biggest grassroots fundraising month in the history of a presidential election.”
The vice president's campaign also touted what it called a “vast war chest,” reporting that it had $404 million in cash as of late last month — more than $100 million more than the $295 million the Trump campaign said it had in its coffers.

Harris' fundraising in August was up from the $310 million the Democratic candidate raised in July, while Trump's fundraising last month was slightly down from the $138.7 million he raised in July.
“In just a short time, Vice President Harris' candidacy has galvanized a historic, broad and diverse coalition with the passion, energy and grit to win a close election,” Harris' campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. “As we enter the final stages of the campaign, we are making sure every penny of our hard-earned dollars is helping to win over the voters who will decide the outcome of this election.”

In a statement disclosing the fundraising figures on Wednesday, the former president's campaign said the cash on hand provided it with “the resources necessary to lead President Trump's campaign to victory.”
The Biden campaign and the DNC had a fundraising lead over Trump and the RNC earlier this year, but in the second quarter of 2024, from April to June, Trump and the RNC outraised Biden and the DNC by $331 million to $264 million.

Biden saw a temporary fundraising surge after his disastrous debate defeat against Trump in late June, as donors poured large amounts of money into a show of support for the 81-year-old president.

But Biden's halting and shaky debate performance quickly raised questions about his physical and mental capacity to serve another four years in the White House and sparked calls from within his own party for the president to not seek a second term. The temporary surge in fundraising was short-lived, and by early July it had begun to slow significantly.
Fundraising, along with opinion polls, is a key indicator of election activity and a measure of a candidate's popularity and the strength of a campaign. Money raised is used to hire staff, expand grassroots and get-out-the-vote activities, create and place advertising on television, radio, digital and mail, and for candidate travel.
