The Directors Guild of America's nominations for Best Feature Film were announced on Wednesday, with Wicked leading the way in the Screen Actors Guild nominations announced hours earlier, but the film's director Jon M. Chu was not named. was nowhere to be found in this lineup.
The five directors nominated for the top DGA award are Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Perez”), Sean Baker (“Anora”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”) and Brady Corbet (“The “Brutalist'') and James Mangold (“A Complete''). unknown”).
Typically, four out of five DGA nominees are nominated for the Best Director Oscar, but last year only three were selected. DGA nominees Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) and Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”) will be joined by Justine Trier (“Anatomy of the Fall”) and Jonathan Glazer (“Zone of Interest”) Oscar Award. This shows the biggest gap between the guild and the academy. While the DGA tends to favor filmmakers from major studios, the academy's director's division is increasingly tilted toward international directors.
With that in mind, nominees like French director Coralie Farget (Substance) shouldn't be excluded from Oscar nominations. But that's a bad sign for Chu and “Dune Part 2” director Denis Villeneuve. If their guilds were not motivated to nominate blockbusters, the more voters of the lofty Academy, the less likely they would be accepted.
Here's an overview of the nominees in major film and television categories. For a complete list, including reality shows and children's programming, visit dga.org. Winners will be announced on February 8th.
