Rory McIlroy completed his career grand slam last month. The Reality Masters Champion recently arrived in Charlotte for the second major of the 2025 season, the PGA Championship.
McIlroy finished the tournament in 47th place with a three-way tie and finished the majors in three overs. Sunday, the final day of the tournament, marked the fourth consecutive day for McIlroy, who refused to speak to members of the media assembled at the Cool Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Speculation swirled that the Northern Irishman had avoided publishing an official statement to the press in light of the situation with his drivers until the tournament. The US Golf Association (USGA) has determined that the McIlroy driver is not suitable. The ruling forced McIlroy to switch.
McIlroy's name was linked to a test failure and eventually became public knowledge through leaks. USGA policies prevent organizations from disclosing the names of players who have undergone failed tests.
Scottie Scheffler won his first career PGA championship
McIlroy was ultimately just one of several competitors who were forced to change equipment for the PGA Championship.
Xander Schauffele, who won last year's PGA Championship, hinted that Scotty Schauffer also had to make changes.

“I think Scott won the tournament and I think he switched to backup too,” Schaufele told Golf Week. “Look, you don't know, because he's so good. (Equipment) Rep is so good now, so we can deal with it.”
Scheffler and McIlroy are approved by Taylormade. On Sunday evening, the brand had not issued an official statement regarding golfer drivers.

Schauffele said testing all competitor clubs would help “protect the integrity of the field.”
“I think they should test everyone's drivers,” he said. “It's not right to just test 50 people. If you're doing it for the spirit of the game, that doesn't make sense. The whole point is to protect the integrity of the field.

Amidst the controversy, the PGA's America issued a statement.
“We can confirm that the PGA request at the PGA Championship has invited USGA to do club tests at the PGA Championship,” the statement read in part. “This testing program is consistent with the same level of support that USGA offers to the PGA Tour and other championships as part of the regular program for driver testing. The standard process is because about a third of the field is randomly tested under the program. Time.”
Schaeffler won the PGA Championship on Sunday, earning the third biggest victory of his career.
