History was going to be made either way on Friday night, but it was Taylor Fritz who would have his name in that history.
The 26-year-old Fritz defeated fellow American Francis Tiafoe in five sets to become the first American tennis player to reach a Grand Slam men's singles final since 2009 and the first player to reach a U.S. Open final since 2006.
“It's a dream come true. I'm in the final and I'm going to give it my all,” Fritz said in a post-match interview. “I can't wait.”
With the win, Fritz became the first American man to reach a major final since Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2009.

If he wins his match against world number one Jannik Sinner, he will become the first American to win a men's Grand Slam singles title since Roddick did it at the U.S. Open 21 years ago.

With history on the line, the fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium gave Fritz a rousing cheer after the game.
“That's why I do what I do,” he told his fans. “That's why I work so hard.”
Fritz defeated Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to reach his first Grand Slam final.
“He was dominant from the baseline… so I just told myself to hang in there and fight,” he said of Tiafoe. “I told myself if I didn't give it my all, hang in there and see if his level dropped a little bit, I was going to regret it for a long time.”
