West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey has vowed to continue his fight to protect women and girls' sports as a transgender athlete competing with girls at state championships.
Becky Pepper-Jackson is a 13-year-old freshman at Bridgeport High School, and is the subject of a Supreme Court lawsuit over participating in women's sports, finishing third in the Discus event and eighth in the Shotput competition.

With Pepper Jackson in the tournament, Morrissey urged authorities to maintain an independent score.
“The boy is currently competing in women's sports at West Virginia's high school state track competition,” Morrissey wrote on Facebook. “That's wrong and unfair. I'm urging staff again to maintain separate scores so that we can award real winners after we win in court.
“We won't stop fighting to protect girls' sports.”
The federal court of appeals blocked West Virginia law last year that prevented biological men from competing with girls and women in sports. The court said the law cannot legally apply to middle school trans girls who are taking adolescent blockers and have been publicly identified as girls since third grade.
West Virginia appealed to the Supreme Court regarding the Court of Appeals' decision.

In 2023, a Supreme Court judge refused to interfere with the Court of Appeal Order that allowed the girl to continue playing on the middle school track and cross-country teams.
When West Virginia's high school athletics moved into the postseason, Morrissey called on coaches to “stopping up” for transgender athletes who participate in women's sports.
“I believe that what's happening in West Virginia – boys playing sports against girls – is abominable and against the law,” he wrote on Facebook. “While we wait for the Supreme Court to issue their decision in this case, I am calling on all the coaches involved to stand up to the right without unfair punishment for these brave athletes.

“As we are all working to remove injunctions that were misdetermined for the next few months, we ask all tournament representatives to maintain full results so that they are recognized when the true winners of each event are in our favour.”
