Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has moved to three goals to break Wayne Gretzky's highest ever scoring mark as he scored his 892nd goal against the Carolina hurricanes on Wednesday night.
It was the Capitals' only goal in a 5-1 defeat to the Hurricanes. He scored almost two points in the game, but was stopped in blissful range in the second term by goalkeeper Frederick Andersen. He defeated Andersen on a 5-3 power play in the second half.

“We have a pretty good chance on the second, first shift breakaway,” Ovechkin said. “And in this game, if they get the chance, they have to use it and I think all the goalkeepers will do well tonight.”
Ovechkin acknowledged the playoff vibe in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the third season, eight players were given game cheating after multiple battles broke out.
“I understand that we may see them in the playoffs,” Ovechkin said. “It was the playoff vibe there.”
The flyer was headed by John Tortorella, just before the season was over after suspicious comments.

Washington and Carolina are two top teams in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The capital has 105 points and the hurricane has 96.
“GR8 Chase” is still on in at least seven more games. Ovechkin closed the record by the end of the weekend with a match against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night, then managed to close the record with a road game against New York Islanders on Sunday.
Greetzky's 894 career goal record was once considered invincible, but Ovechkin is set to defy the odds.

“The (record) feels like it's right there,” said Capitals defensive man Trevor Van Reemsdick. “It feels like he's still scoring every night. It's huge for us and it's great to see him still doing it at this passionate pace.”
