Dick Vitale said college basketball has “a big problem” with the NIL and the transfer portal.
Vitale, 85, discussed the state of college basketball during his recent appearance on Outkick's “Don't @Me With Dan Dakich.”
“I think we've had a mess with college basketball. Complete disruption. Stability isn't banged. It's Wild West. In one day at the opening of the portal, never open to the heart of the NCAA tournament.
“But the bottom line has over 1,000 people in the portal and they ask, “How much money am I making?” Everyone is chasing the Bucks.

“I recently played games. Kids (playing in four schools). Four schools. What's going on? I don't know how you feel, but I think there are some rules for the transfer portal and NIL. They need some rules. You are the best free agency in all sports. Even if you are a professional athlete, you are a professional athlete.
Vitale is worried about the transfer portal and NIL, but the players said they deserve to make money.

“I think this is definitely the end of the day that players deserve money because they're making cash. But basically, the commercial, you're coming in and you get paid for it.
“And let's look at what happened there, a sweet 16. The mid-major team isn't another team and really doesn't have a chance.
Vitale coached at Detroit University and then spoke about how his best players weren't there if they were.

“When I was in Detroit, I was telling people that we were pretty good. We won 21 straight. We were the national champions in the year when we beat them on their court. We beat Arizona.
“I had four NBA players in my program. Terry Tyler, John, I'm thinking of sitting for a long time, but those guys would be gone. They would have gone to Michigan, Indiana.
