Trey Lance was selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers as a potential future for the franchise.
The 49ers drafted Lance in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, moving him from the 12th pick to the 3rd pick. But at least in Lance's case, the movement and swing didn't work out the way the 49ers expected. He started four games for San Francisco and went 2-2.

Lance suffered several injuries, and eventually Brock Purdy emerged as the team's starting quarterback. He was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023 and sat as the third quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
Even though Prescott finished the 2024 season with poor rushing performance, team owner Jerry Jones said he didn't want to see Lance play.
“I thought Rush really improved last night from the last game. He hasn't had a long way to go, but I thought he was growing,” Jones said in an interview with 105.3 The Fan. he said.

According to Yahoo Sports, Jones added that he doesn't think the Cowboys missed an opportunity when they traded him for a mid-round pick, and said he thinks Lance has “improved dramatically” since the trade. .

Lance has totaled 818 passing yards and five touchdown passes in nine games. He played in the Cowboys' game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He went 4-of-6 for 21 yards and an interception.
