Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff sent a letter to major social media executives this week asking them to clarify how they will combat “misinformation” and “disinformation” in the 2024 election.
The letter, co-signed by seven other lawmakers, accuses social media platforms including X, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok of not adequately preparing for a malicious infohazard in November.
“We are concerned about members of Congress and are writing to your platforms to address the spread of misinformation and disinformation on your platforms, or potential incitement to violence, in the lead-up to the 2024 election. We are seeking more information about preparedness and response,” the California congressman wrote. . “We have already seen how posts containing disinformation spread on major social media platforms in the United States and around the world during the election period.”

The letter goes on to say, “We remain concerned about your companies' ability to efficiently and effectively respond to misinformation, disinformation, or potential incitement to violence that occurs on your platforms. There I am,” he continued.
In their letter, the signatories specifically criticized social platforms Meta, Discord, and Snap for “drastically reducing their campaign teams” after the 2022 election.
X, Meta, and TikTok were named and reprimanded for not being more transparent with outside groups that could help monitor election information.

“Although the impetus for this letter is the 2024 election, misinformation and disinformation related to politics and elections exists between elections, so we also urge you to We're asking you to commit to taking action against misinformation, not just this year, but throughout the year.''
