It was hard to concentrate on my council office through a thin wall with conservative media host Glenn Beck. You might assume I work for Republicans, but I am the California State Senator, Locanna's progressive chief of staff.
What if I said it was one of our best interviews in the last few months?
They opposed President Trump's deportation efforts and USAID funding, but agreed to a revitalization of manufacturing and a lead against China. The interview headline said, “The progressive Democrats are sitting with Glenn Beck despite their differences. 'We're all Team America',” and we agreed that he'll be back soon.
Logan laughs at Democrats for “no hug at all” months after losing to Trump
There is debate as to whether Democrats need a stronger message or a more robust left-wing media. But what Democrats really need is to relearn the art of persuasion. It's about creating a compelling message, but also coming up with ways to navigate today's busy media landscape.
Democrats don't need “leftist Joe Rogan.” We need to convince Americans all over the country that we share a common ground and are worth supporting.
I saw Ro start the process with Glenn Beck, so I know that's possible. They disagreed with everything, but the conversation opened the door. It's persuasion: not an immediate conversion, but a place to appear, hear, and start.

Our leaders are surrounded by chatty consultants obsessed with vote-tested messages and fearing to disrupt their feathers. Every morning I receive dozens of emails urging Americans to tell them that Maga Republicans are trying to take their health care away. I believe it! But it takes multiple lines to persuade people. We need a detailed, factual, and a clear vision of what Democrats support.
RO has built this foundation for years. He traveled to dozens of states, partnered with Silicon Valley to expand technology opportunities, and since the election he held City Hall in Republican Districts. In Pennsylvania's recent Allentown, RO spoke with Trump supporters that he was outspoken about his bipartisan bill to cut the costs of prescription drugs. Finally, they went inside and were praised.
Having a message is just the first step. The next challenge is to break through today's media ecosystem. Can it be spreading through word of mouth on social media, picked up by the media, or reach a wider audience, and still reach the land? Amplification is equally important.

It is undeniable that Republicans have invested significantly more time and resources to build a strong online ecosystem to reach voters. Now to overcome it, the Democrats need to be fearless. Overflowing the zone, reaching the person they are and winning. Download Tiktok, hire talented chronically online 22 year olds, post to subreddits and create subsacks. Talk to Mahdi Hasan in the morning and Laura Ingraham in the evening. Create an OPEED for Fox News Digital.
It's not about giving anyone a platform or legitimacy. Their platforms already exist and their audience consider them legal. It involves using these platforms to share your message and adjusting the way you communicate with different audiences without compromising your value.

You also need to balance viral moments with delicate messages about complex issues. RO's prescription drug bill gains traction on X and Reddit. But his core vision – new economic patriotism focusing on 21st century solutions for economic success for all communities, including new factories and AI academies, has not been taken away from online in the same way. But the lengthy interviews and podcasts are full of enthusiasm. Both messages are important and you need to find the right time and place for each.
After all, Joe Logan supported Bernie Sanders in the 2020 presidential election. As he drifted towards Donald Trump, we shrugged and said he was gone forever. Why not try again by looking at coordinated messages and persuasion?
Joe, if you're reading this, I have a pitch for you.
