On Thursday, April 17, 2025, Vice President JD Vance and his second family, at a joint base in Andrews, Maryland, disembark from Marine 2 and serve in Air Force 2 on their way to Rome, Italy.
“Everyone is adjusting well. They're doing really well,” Vance said. “No, right?”
“My 7-year-old son Ewan, he's adjusting, but he knows everything,” Vance said.
“And we have a five-year-old son, Vivek. I don't think he'll notice that a bit,” Vance continued. “For him, it's just fun. He has a lot of secret service agents to play with.
“And the three Mirabels don't know what's going on,” Vance said of his youngest.
Vance shared a photo of Mirabelle. He and his wife displayed it at their home at the Navy Observatory, “in pajamas reviewing the formation of this Indian army.”

“It's so funny. It might be my favorite photo of 100 days so far. It's so cute,” Vance said. “So you're like seeing different levels of a child's understanding of that.”
Vance said the children “have good school situations.”
“I have good friends here and they spend a lot of time in the White House,” Vance said.
“Of course, our main residence – we still have our home in Cincinnati, but our main residence is the Naval Observatory,” Vance said. “It's so isolated that it's not like to have grown up in a bowl of fish for kids.”

Vance said the kids “have a lot of room to run around.”
“There are no cameras everywhere. It feels very private. It's very normal for kids. This is everything we can ask for.”
Regarding his wife, Vance said, “Each second woman approaches roles differently. It's not the manual that says it. This is how you become a second lady.”

“I think what Usha did is focus on some issues she cares about and is very involved with the Kennedy Center. She really loves art and that's the project she took on,” Vance explained, adding that she plans to “take on additional projects.”

“But she's also a mom,” Vance said. “And since the kids are really young, she saw this as an opportunity to bring a lot of normalcy to their children in very unusual circumstances.”
