Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 8 percentage points in Virginia, a state Trump's campaign is trying to flip to the Republican Party after losses in 2016 and 2020.
A new Washington Post-Schar School poll released on Tuesday before the two candidates debate in Philadelphia showed Harris leading Trump 50% to 42% in the Old Dominion State, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
The poll highlights Harris' dramatic shift to the top of Virginia's Democratic candidates since her dramatic election as the Democratic nominee to replace President Biden.

A June Fox News poll showed Biden and Trump in a close race. Biden won Virginia by more than 10 points in 2020. Hillary Clinton won the state by more than 5 points over Trump in 2016, but Trump went on to win the presidential election.
No Republican presidential candidate has won Virginia since former President George W. Bush was re-elected in 2004.
Republicans continue to make gains in the state, with Governor Glenn Youngkin becoming the first Republican elected governor since 2009 in the 2021 elections and further victories in the 2022 midterm elections and out-of-state elections in 2023.
Mark Rozelle, dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, said the polls also show that Trump doesn't have a significant lead on any of the issues measured in the survey.
“What's most remarkable is not only the size of Harris' lead, but also that, unlike national polls that show Trump leading on the economy, immigration and crime, Trump is not ahead on any issue,” Rozelle told The Washington Post.
“So President Trump's path to the presidency does not go through Virginia.”
