Vice President Kamala Harris hinted at signing federal abortion protections into law in a speech in Wisconsin Thursday night.
“You don't have to give up your faith or deeply held beliefs to consent. The government shouldn't be telling you what to do with your body,” Harris said, referring to women.
“If Congress passes a bill that restores reproductive freedom across the country, I will proudly sign it into law as President of the United States.”

Harris has made abortion rights a cornerstone of her 2024 campaign and has frequently spoken out on the issue in her capacity as President Biden's vice president.
Democrats are hoping the continuing fallout from the Supreme Court's 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade will become a powerful political cudgel in November. In previous midterm elections, it was partially credited with helping keep the Senate and narrow the gap between Republicans winning the House.
Harris said Wednesday night that President Trump would impose a “nationwide ban on abortion” and a similar ban on contraceptives, both positions the former president has explicitly rejected.

Abortion-related issues are on the ballot in November's election in several states, including battleground states Nevada and Arizona. Democrats hope this will motivate people who are normally disinterested in voting to go to the polls and vote blue.

“Our fight is a fight for the future, and it's also a fight for freedom. Freedom is the fundamental freedom for women to make decisions about their own bodies and not be told what to do by the government. Same thing,” Harris said Wednesday.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) condemned Harris ahead of her appearance in the battleground state of Wisconsin, with Chairman Michael Whatley saying in a statement that “Harris' vision for Wisconsin is in line with the even more dangerous liberals of the past four years.'' Kamala Harris will destroy Wisconsin's economy, but President Trump will fix it.”
