After captivating the audience as the charming Astrid of “Crazy Rich Asian,” Jemma Chan was sent a considerable number of scripts with his dignified but unfortunate wife.
She first felt trouble.
“There's a risk of typecasting,” she said. “But I'm still in progress and I'm pushing it back. I want to do something different, show something different and talk about something different.”
Her new film “Actor” directed by Duke Johnson, checked out those boxes. Chang plays Edna, a costume designer in the factory town and a romantic interest in amnesia.
She loved Johnson's unforgettable animated film, “Anomalisa.” She replied similarly when she read “Actor.”
“Then I told Duke about what he was going to film it, and it was a completely different way to what I had filmed before,” she said. “It brings a very experimental, very theatrical and very stylized element.”
Chan also wrapped “Josephine” along with Channing Tatum about the eight-year-old who witnessed the attack. And she has produced her own work: the adaptation of the “Empress of the Empress” fantasy book series for Amazon Prime Video and the unconventional history of Anna Mae Wong, considered the first Chinese-American movie star.
“As an actor, you often come quite late in the process and you're part of fulfilling someone else's vision,” she said. “It was really exciting and it made me choose where I wanted to focus on my focus.”
In a video interview, Chan talked about becoming a cat woman, living on Mars and learning to play Schubert. These are excerpts from the conversation.
Dim Sum
My family and the dimness have been a ritual since my childhood. There are certain restaurants in London's Chinatown that I go to again and again. The food is very tasty and in a relatively limited Cantonese you can order all your favorites. These restaurants often have very active service, but no other way.
London
When I was apart for a long time, I really miss it. I miss the slightly harsh sense of humor that Londoners have. Winter is dark and very demonic, but it's a great place when spring comes.
My cat, Kitty
I have always been a dog person and didn't understand the appeal of cats. Then my boyfriend worked in Puglia a few years ago and he was staying at this farmhouse and there were stray cats around. And this little kitten, with a ridiculous tail and a gorgeous personality, wandered into his room and basically moved there. We adopted him and sadly brought him from the beautiful Italian countryside to our London apartment.
“City of Mars” by Kelly Weiner Smith and Zack Weiner Smith
They say, “Should we go out into space? Should we calm the moon and Mars?” book has a lot of humor, and they argue that if you come out of the atmosphere of Earth, it is very hostile to life. I am very grateful as we already live in Eden.
Sunday Roast
It's a classic British dinner or lunch. Potatoes, trimmings, gravy, all of that is such a comfortable food and a very nice meal to share.
Appropriate tea
I love what we call builder tea. I use a very strong Yorkshire tea bag. You need to brew them properly and then don't add too much milk. In the UK, it feels like you're going to have a serious tea drink in the UK whether you're about to celebrate or start your day.
Arsenal Football Club
I was four years old and have supported Arsenal for almost everything in my life. I go to Emirates Stadium several times a year. There are often moments where you are so used to it that crushes disappointment.
Schubert's improvisation recorded by Alfred Brendel
I filmed “Josephine” in San Francisco last year and was a Steinway piano where I stayed. I started playing again for a long time. Listen to Brendel recordings while traveling, on a train, or when you need to clean your mind. I've always wanted to try playing one of these pieces, so I started to learn No. 3.
“The mood of love”
Colors, costumes. There are heartbreaking performances from Tony Leon and Maggie Chung. Wong Kar Wy's skills in telling this story could have been very melodramatic, but he does it with such restraint that it moves even more.
Joni Mitchell's “Blue”
When I first started listening in college, I didn't really understand it. But as I get older, the lyrics of her songs resonate with me more deeply. Only these themes of love and loss she speaks through her music. I think “A Case of You” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
