Sovereignty took home the Kentucky Derby on Saturday in Louisville.
There was a bumpy start inside, with Bob Baffert's Citizen Bull leading early, and journalism was a morning line favorite and not close to the top.
Journalism discovers trouble on the first turn, and Jockey Umbertolispoli moves him outside. He and Sovereignty met at the eighth pole before Sovereignty and Jockey Junior Alvarado were separated.

Sovereignty actually followed most of the race and didn't make much of a big move to the nearest final turn.
On the final stretch, the 42-1 Neo Ecos was on the top, but both sovereignty and journalism moved forward.
After running the neck and neck, sovereignty kicked out the favourites. Journalism opened 3-1 and closed 7-2.
Sovereignty crossed the finish line at 2:02.31. Baeza finished third, final Gambit was fourth and Owen Almighty finished fifth.
It was trainer Bill Mott's second Kentucky Derby victory. He also won at the country house since 2019 after being disqualified by maximum security swinging towards the paths of other horses.

It was a rainy day at Churchill Downs, and fans filled the poncho-clad stands in the rain.
Saturday marked Buffate's return to the Rose run after missing each of the previous three races as 2021 Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a drug test. The horse died that December.
According to the Louisville, Kentucky Courier Journal, all horses that ran the race are descendants of the famous Racehorse Office.

The Secretariat has given birth to over 660 registered foals during his life. He won the Derby in an hour of 1:59.40.
