Maine could face consequences from the Justice Department with its continued refusal to ban trans athletes from girl sports and the rejection of weighted lawmakers who brought awareness to issues within the state.
After the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Civil Rights Office (OCR) said it introduced Maine's “non-violation” to the Justice Department, Maine Republican Rep. Laurel Libby blamed Janet Mills and state Democrats.
“Maine has been officially featured in the Department of Justice after Governor Mills and the Democratic majority refused to adhere to federal Title IX protections, a direct result of a fundamental policy that has preceded ideology over equity and safety for girls in Maine and outweighed ideology over student education,” Libby told Fox News Digital.

“Mainer believes in common sense, fairness and protection of the rights of women and girls in sports and spaces. This extreme attitude does not reflect the values of our nation, but ultimately we are Maine schools, students and taxpayers who suffer from the consequences of their reckless decisions and the ongoing feud with biological reality.”
Libby has drawn national attention to her state's issue of trans-inclusion in girl sports, and in a social media post revealed that the Greeley High School transgender track and field athlete has finished first in the Main Girls Pole Vault Competition, where she competed as a boy just a year ago.
Trump administrator responds to Maine's unwillingness to ban trans athletes from women's sports
Trans-athlete Libby's revelation sparked national conversations and coverage of state policies on national trans-inclusion after Maine announced it would not comply with President Donald Trump's recent executive order of “no-men in women's sports” .
Trump then vowed to cut funds to the state for refusing to comply with his orders at a governor's gathering at the White House on February 20th.
The next day, Mills' office responded with a statement threatening legal action against the Trump administration if it withholds federal funds from the state. Trump and Mills then spawned verbally in a widely publicized discussion at the White House during a bipartisan meeting of the governor.

Hours after that conflict, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it would investigate the state to allow trans-athletes to compete with women's sports for potential Title IX violations.
Police protection was later assigned to the high schools attended by the Transathlete Tribe, identified in a Facebook post.
Libby was criticized for a Facebook post by the Democratic majority in Maine.
She has since filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn her accusations.
