Max Scherzer's Toronto Blue Jays debut ended earlier than most people expected.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw 45 pitches before an apparent thumb injury forced him to finish the game after just three innings.
The Blue Jays later said Shelzer was dealing with pain in the right latitude.

The eight-time MLB All-Star looked frustrated in the Toronto dugout.
After the match, Scherzer shared his belief that proper latitude issues were related to ongoing thumb issues. On Wednesday, Jays manager John Schneider said reporters Shelzer is “still moving in the right direction.”

Scherzer has been dealing with thumb discomfort since spring training. On Saturday he proposed that the prolonged issues would force his body to overcompensate.

He suggested that passing three innings in a game against the Baltimore Orioles could lead to more problems.
“After those three innings, we were able to tell you we were in imminent danger,” Scherzer said. “If you pitch this and continue pitching as arm fatigue, this goes.”
Scherzer also admitted that he didn't feel completely comfortable when he threw the bullpen before the game Saturday.
“Today, warming up, I was able to feel my latitude was tight. … Before the game (Schneider) “Work with me here. Know that something could be happening,” he said.

He pitched for the Texas Rangers last season, but began the year on an injured list as he recovered from back surgery. His 2024 debut was further delayed by neurological issues. Scherzer started nine times last season.
