After about an hour, “Misericordia” becomes an increasingly bent kind of murder mystery. There, the weapon becomes a murder mystery with sticks and stones. There, the village abbot (Jack Deverey) is suspicious and normally, and unexpectedly suspected, and proves that the cove flesh himself is suspicious. The mystery isn't who did it or even why (this feels unnecessary as the film's murder progresses), but how does this person get away with it and who will give Misericordia?
With about a quarter-century filmmaking, Gilady became an indirect maestro. His films go according to their own logic. Movies are psychologically meaningless. Or maybe it's more accurate to say about people who are completely psychological and therefore human behavior: impulses, impulses, drives, reactions, etc., about the person who is having sex and murdering them. Much of the action takes place outside – in the woods. Even sex – in Girady, we all somehow get naked, a bunch of Shipmanks, weasels and owls. Spies, Liars, Losers, Cretin, Creep: these are people who don't know that they've lost the plot, they're out of control. Do you know the squirrels? His films have different dangers, but intruders are everywhere. And they are always – and I always – hiding in the bushes.
The main character's ID is always unricated, avoided or blamed by the Sparego policemen, fathers, and clergy. But sometimes, Spa Lego also has an ID! Guiraudie is the gate crusher and keeper. This is a film about a man working in a mushroom business with a bakery family. Ask how much bread you can see. Wait a long time to witness a bite of food or ask me how all the casserole plates were shaved. At one point, the character laments the decline in his passion for bread, as if he were reciting Malthus. I have never been more impressed with the film. Abbot who is in both confessions? Lovelorn, Lusty, lovable, look visible. Bisexuality that is never a crisis. It all feels new.
Guiradie knows that many of us see “Strangers by the Lake” and probably want it more. Smart structure and pacing; traditional suspense, death that broke your heart, eager gay politics. Perhaps there is another person within him. But it's not as if he lost the plot. I think he's interested in threatening genres and how much he can get away with. “Misericordia” is a movie noir with lights on. It tickles even when that character is working on your nerves. Guiradie plays those nerves like a harp.
