As I wrote earlier this week, it happened to me that House Democrats became like zombies after attending President Donald J. Trump's speech to a joint session of Congress.
Their members sat muted and motionless, no matter what the president said and who he respected. None of the houses showed traces of human compassion or interest. It was a little creepy.
As I thought more about this, many other things made sense.
Democrats denounce Democrats for jeering Trump during their speech to Congress: Report
House Democrats evolved from being relatively rough and falling in the 1960s and 1970s, a debate and rebellious bunch.
Historically, of course, the Democrats had a deep tradition of mechanical politics back to the establishment of Tammany Hall in New York City in 1786. In the long run, democratic systems tend to simply breed conformity. However, this zombism is a newer, more extreme phenomenon.
You can track it with speaker Nancy Pelosi. Remember when Pelosi lifted up the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) of nearly 1,000 pages and said, “We must pass the bill so you can find what's in it.” At the time I thought it was a stupid slip of my tongue. In hindsight, Pelosi's speeches often involved members of the Democrat who voted blindly, as directed by elected leadership.
As a speaker for President Joe Biden's first two years, Pelosi made the most of this blind loyalty to pass a massive bill that elected officials really don't know much about.

After Democrats voted for a deeply unpopular policy, parents learned what their children were learning in schools, allowing men to play women's sports, oppose tax cuts, and leave the southern border open. Now I'll get it. They turned into zombies.
For a long time, I have not understood how Democrats in the home could bravely ignore the will of the American people. Now I'll get it. They turned into zombies.
Of course, Pelosi didn't do it alone. Unions of teachers and civil servants lined up people, threatening to fund their major enemies. Left billionaires and activist groups also policed House Democrats.

The propaganda media also happily reminded the Democrats of the party movement line. From “View” to MSNBC, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, the signals came out. this is us. This is what we believe. Those who broke the rank were exiled and isolated. Ask Sen. Joe Manchin, Director of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., or Director of National Intelligence.

Finally, there was pure social pressure from other Democrats. Walking to the vote and getting on the elevator with five or six left-wing members could have a big impact on whether someone voted against the Democratic leader. On a practical level, losing committee allocations and seeing more obedient members get better committees is a true lever of power. I came across this in the 1980s when several Southern Democrats voted with President Ronald Reagan. They suddenly found a committee assignment and proposed a law of danger.
The ultimate example of zombie behavior in the Democrats was the replacement of President Biden by Vice President Kamala Harris. President Biden had won all the primary elections. He will control the democratic national convention. Vice President Harris had won zero votes. However, within hours, the zombie defeated Biden and raised Harris.

In the party, which had been lectured on democracy for four years, this immediate switch would have only been possible with the Zombie Party. They did as they were told. They were praised when they were told. When they were told, they lied to themselves.
It will be interesting to see how House Democrats deal with the challenges of dynamic, creative and offensive Republicans. President Trump hopes to run cheerfully around House Democrat zombies, just like he did Tuesday night.
