Patrick Mahomes enters the 2025 season with another new backup quarterback.
Gardner Minshew, who started nine games for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, has signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City chief, according to ESPN.
Minshew signed a two-year, $25 million contract in his final offseason to fight for the opening role with the Raiders.

He started the first five games of the season, but after moving on to 2-3, head coach Antonio Pierce went with his backup, Aidan O'Connell, for week six with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Minshew has returned from week 8 as the Raiders struggled to put together the victory. Then in week 12, Minshew knocked him out for the rest of the season, breaking the collarbone left him with a quarterback mission in O'Connell's hands.

Minshew finished two to eight years in the 10 games he played, passing 2,013 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
However, Minshew had a better season in the past, including in 2023 the year of the Pro Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts. He made it 7-6 with rookie Anthony Richardson's 13 starts and pitched a career-high 3,305 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

In a six-year career that began as the Jacksonville Jaguars' sixth pick in 2019, Minshew is 17-29 with 46 starts with 11,950 passing yards, 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.
Last season, former Philadelphia Eagles franchise quarterback Carson Wentz backed up Kansas City's Mahomes. A year ago, it was Chad Henne.

The Chiefs hope that Minshew doesn't have to step into the starting role, as it means Mahomes will deal with the injury.
