The Golden Globe Awards are truly back.
After several scandal-plagued years that put the Golden Globes in jeopardy, the awards organization's influence is now felt across Oscar nominations. Had Torres not won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama just before the extended Oscar voting process began, I'm Still Here would have won Best Picture, Best International Film, and Best Actress Fernanda.・Did Demi Moore do well by winning the Torres Award nomination? If he hadn't given that dynamite speech at the Globes, would he have been considered an Oscar frontrunner? Shock is hard to beat and Oscar strategists will be eager to repeat this victory next season. Not bad for a ceremony in which Hollywood came together to take the show off the air in 2022.
A hard truth to swallow.
In “Hard Truths,” Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, an unhappy woman with endless dissatisfaction. Well, you can add one more to the list. Even though Jean-Baptiste won top honors from the New York and Los Angeles critics groups and the National Society of Film Critics, the Academy was not rewarded. What gives? I expected Jean-Baptiste to just barely make it into the Best Actress nominations, but I'd change that because many of the male voters I spoke to simply didn't like the character. was difficult. When women suffer nobly, it's Oscar fodder. But not so much when she torments others.
Supporting actress race, reshuffle.
Actors who haven't been nominated for any major prelude other than the Screen Actors Guild Awards in the past decade typically don't make it into the Oscar lineup. Monica Barbaro was glad to have beaten the tough odds. The 34-year-old actress, who plays Joan Baez in Completely Unknown, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, beating out stiff competition from Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last). Daniel Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), Margaret Qualley (Substance), Selena Gomez (Emilia Perez).
“Challengers” lost the biggest game.
Although this movie was one of my favorite movies of the year, I wasn't bullish on “Challengers” getting an Oscar nomination. It's simply because this movie is so interesting and it was released so early this year. Still, one might have hoped for at least one nomination in the original score category, as the techno beats composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross give it one of the most distinctive film scores of the year. Unfortunately, the Oscars completely ignored their score, even though Reznor and Ross won a Golden Globe for this film just a few weeks ago. (Well, maybe the Golden Globes' newfound influence only goes so far.)
“Emilia Perez” makes history.
How well did “Emilia Perez” do? The film led the field with 13 Oscar nominations as of Thursday, but if Gomez had earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination, she would have been nominated for “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La.
