Providence, Rhode Island, has accepted a request to raise the Palestinian flag on Friday at city hall in the state's capital.
City officials emphasized that American flags have not been kicked out for displays, adding that several flags have been raised in government offices in the past.
“Providence City Hall displays a variety of flags throughout the year to mark different opportunities and honor the many ethnic and cultural backgrounds and traditions that make our city stronger,” a Providence City Council spokesman told Fox News Digital on Wednesday.
The spokesman added that the city has flew Dominican flags, Ireland flags, Armenian flags and Israel flags in recent months.

“Like these examples, the idea came to us from the community as part of a demand to celebrate the important role Palestinian Americans play in our beautiful and diverse urban fabrics,” the spokesman said.
Council Chairman Rachel Miller will post the flag outside city hall on Friday at City Council meeting Thursday.
When asked about the decision, representatives of Democratic mayor Brett Smiley suggested that the ceremony was a city council privilege.
Fetterman's spokeswoman reportedly contradicted the Israeli boss: “Incomparable hub arrogance.”
“In Providence, the administrative department and the city council are two separate branches of the government. Rather than Mayor Smiley's office, Providence City Council will raise the Palestinian flag on Friday,” said Smiley spokesman Josh Estrella.
A report from GolocalProvidence says that the Palestinian flag is reportedly becoming more common across city halls.
Indoor rooms usually fly only the state and flag, the report says.

Fox News Digital contacted the State Department to ask where they stand in the flag debate, given the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Requests for comment were also received from the office of Dr. Gabe Amo, who represents many of the capital regions of the marine state.
