The parents of Sudiksha Conanki, a 20-year-old college student who went missing during a spring break trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, said she accepted the possibility of her being drowned and sought privacy to mourn her privacy, according to a statement to the media on Tuesday.
Their sad statement came more than a week after her loss of failure on March 6 grabbed headlines around the world and led to repeated questions from the last person she saw with her.
“Sudiksha's family has expressed their belief that she was drowned,” the Virginia Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Tuesday. “The final decision to make such a declaration depends on the authorities of the Dominican Republic, but we will support the Conanki family in all ways,” the office said.
In a 5 dc video of tears in tears shared online, Conanki's father accepted that “daughter owns” and said this conclusion was “very difficult for us to handle.” Her mother sobbed as she read the statement. They also sought “time and privacy to focus on healing” and their families, NBC4 Washington reported.
Conanki, a student at the University of Pittsburgh in Loudon County, was last seen almost two weeks ago. According to Dominican Republic authorities, she was found early on March 6th with an unknown friend who was “investigating” on a beach in Punta Cana.
The man, who was not named by the New York Times because he had not been charged with a crime, attended a court hearing in the city of Higui, Dominica on Tuesday, but the results of the lawsuit have not yet been revealed by authorities.
During the proceedings, the judge granted the man's request that he could move around freely without police supervision.
Conanki stayed at the hotel RIU Republica in Punta Cana with five friends after arriving in the Dominican Republic on March 3, police said. Her loss of failure sparked a massive search in the Caribbean, which relies heavily on foreign tourism.
When the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic warned the national police that Conanki had disappeared, authorities began a thorough search of the beach and surrounding area using drones, helicopters, divers, boats and police dogs, authorities said.
Police said more than 300 agents were looking for Conanki. The FBI is helping with the investigation, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
