The 2024 U.S. Open will be one Coco Gauff will want to forget quickly.
The defending champion failed to advance beyond the round of 16, losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to fellow American Emma Navarro on Sunday afternoon.
Navarro won the first set and the second was a back-and-forth affair from the beginning, when with the set tied at 3-3, Navarro broke Gauff's serve to take a 4-3 lead and put Gauff in a bind.

But it wasn't enough, as Gauff returned the favor by breaking Navarro's serve, then led 5-4 and then broke Navarro's serve again to take the match into a third set.
Gauff won the first game and the momentum seemed to be on her side, but it didn't last, as Navarro won the next three games. They then traded games back and forth, with Gauff serving to put Navarro up 5-3, but it didn't go too well for the reigning champion, who double-faulted three times to send Navarro into the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic's shock defeat at the US Open ends an incredible 22-year winning streak
Gauff committed 19 double faults in the match, 11 of which came in the final set, and after her final double fault she threw down her racket in anger.
Although she had advanced to the semifinals in the past three Grand Slams, this was the second consecutive time she was eliminated in the round of 16. It was also the sixth consecutive year that the reigning champion has failed to reach the quarterfinals. Not since Serena Williams in 2015 has a reigning champion advanced to the semifinals.
Navarro next faces Spain's Paula Badosa on Tuesday. This is the best year of her career for the 23-year-old Navarro, who had never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam before this year, and her second consecutive quarterfinal.
