This article is almost entirely spoiler-based.
Online “retirement” rabbit holes are deep, and fans share theories about the meaning of the notebook used for elevator dents, the Lumon Industries Office (Is it actually a hospital?), and other true nature of the Arcana. Which of them will be rewarded in the season 2 finale?
Yes, after all. In fact, one of the most popular predictions in the explosive episodes was the numbers Mark S was enthusiastically sorted in the terminal, actually the building blocks of his wife Gemma's mind. With every file he completed, her new consciousness (Innie) was created to be tortured on the test floor.
This effort culminated in his 25th final file, Cold Harbor. Mark S was completed as part of a larger scheme and collaboration between his iney and out to free her.
Relying on Mark S.'s instincts, this work was tied to “The Four Tempers,” as confirmed by Harmony Covell. Wear hats to “retirement” enthusiasts who saw it coming!
And while the big Cold Harbor revelation will satisfy the followers for a while, many other questions remained, and many more were introduced.
Yes, we have learned that goats serve some ritual and sacrificial purpose. “This beast will be buried with a precious woman who has to guide the spirit that must lead the keel door,” Lumon's Fixer tells Lorne, a mammalian care office who passes bolt guns to kill the animal.
But certainly this is just one element of a much larger arc. It may include things that “retirement” enthusiasts are increasingly interested in as season two unfolds, including the mystery of the gorgeous writer Ricken, Mark's stepbrother. (Some of my colleagues wanted the finale to be fully dedicated to him.)
Of the many goat-related theories and clues attached to Ricken, my favorite is that his phone alarm is a cowbell while reading a season 1 book. Is Ricken the goat out? (And is it too conspiratorial to find a connection between Cowbell and Cobel? I'll go almost anything when it comes to “retirement.”)
We also learned that the comically creepy Jame Egan, Lemont's chief executive and father of Helena Egan, “s” many children in the shadows.” But who exactly? And why in the finale he tells Helly R?
After Mark and Gemma escaped from the test floor, Dr. Mauer (reminder: he was a doctor at a flashback at a fertility clinic) said, “You'll kill them all!”, does he mention all the aneys (including dozens of her head), all the outs, or other groups we haven't started to imagine?
Other important lingering questions that require the patience of the fans:
Where is Irving? Remember, in the penultimate episode, he was sent by train to probably not return.
How did Gemma become a prisoner of Loumon and what did she sign at the Fertility Clinic? (Her intake form had a Lumon logo.)
And will she run away from the facility after a brief and heartbreaking reunion with Mark, ends up being abandoned by her husband, Innie? Or will she go back to the test floor?
How many other people's hearts are broken there?
Is it possible to fully reintegrate?
Milchick, who has done so much during the celebration of Mark S.'s Cold Harbor completion, is he sour at Loumon after enduring a barrage of micro-attacks and a full attack from higher ups from his men? Or will he keep tighter than ever in his post as manager?
Did Lumon's leaders call Cold Harbor exactly the perfection of one of the greatest moments in the history of the planet?
And for all of their grand claims about eliminating pain from human experience, do you learn what they really want and who they think are human, while giving innies an indescribable pain?
As for me, I can't shake up the feeling that Helly R, who put everything in danger to help Mark S. Free Gemma, never derailed his escape in the final moments. She even seemed to have been a violation and a condition in the fact that she and Helena were the same person, dispelling the notion that he and Mark S had eventually found happiness together.
Has Glasgow Block started (again)? Was that actually Helena holding hands with Mark S and running into the inevitable intestines of the office? Or did Jame Egan somehow replace or integrate her with Helly R, even though he didn't see Keer in Helena?
The good news is that on Friday, Apple announced that its “retirement” had officially been renewed for its third season. The great news is that executive producer and frequent director Ben Stiller assured fans that they don't have to wait another three years in Season 3, as they did between the first two.
But try to enjoy both news equally.
