Richard “Rick” Grenell, the former acting director of national intelligence during President-elect Trump's first administration, is reportedly being considered to serve as special envoy on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
There is currently no special envoy responsible for ending the war in Eastern Europe. Trump is strongly considering creating the role, Reuters reported, citing four sources familiar with the president's deliberations.
Grenell is said to be a likely candidate if Trump creates a new position, but Trump could choose someone else, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. There is also no guarantee that Grenell will accept the position if offered, the people said.

At a Bloomberg roundtable in July, he advocated the creation of “autonomous regions” as a way to resolve the conflict that began after Russia invaded Ukraine's sovereign territory. He also indicated that he would not support Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the time being, a position shared by many of Mr. Trump's allies.
Grenell's supporters point to his long diplomatic career and deep knowledge of European affairs. In addition to serving as ambassador to Germany, Grenell also served as special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations.
