Of the six prosecutors at the US Lawyer's office in the Southern District of New York, Mohren Comey is handling the case against Sean Combs.
Comey, a prosecutor for nearly a decade, was also involved in a lawsuit against a former socialite lawsuit that conspired with Jeffrey Epstein to sexually exploit the minor girl. Comey was also one of the prosecutors in charge of criminal cases against Epstein, and was found to have died in prison.
At Maxwell's trial in 2021, Comey filed a final argument with the prosecutors, where he begged the ju judge to believe the woman who testified against the defendant. Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking and other numbers and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James B. Comey, spent much of her time at the prosecutor's office dealing with gang violence and drug trafficking cases. She also charged the case against Robert A. Hadden, a former gynecologist convicted of seducing a woman into his office for sexual assault.
Other members of the prosecutor's team also have experience with federal assault laws (impacting and corrupt organizational laws) that support the lawsuit against Combs.
Another lead prosecutor, Emily A. Johnson, has several gang-related assault cases on her resume, including one involving a Trinitarios gang leader who was sentenced to life in prison last year.
Johnson led the prosecutor's team at last year's hearing, and Combs was denied bail. She described him as “serial abuser and serial blocker,” and read the text messages voiced by alleged victims to ensure his incarceration.
During the hearing, prosecutors provide information on their cases in small increments, ensuring that most of the details are not made public until trial. They show that the witness to their star is Mr. Combs' former girlfriend, Cassandra Ventura, but they have not mentioned her name in public courts so far.
Christie Slavik, who arrived at the Southern District Office in 2019, is currently indicting an assault science case involving members of the CRIPS gang accused. She has experience with drug cases, including the prosecution of a Times Square crack cocaine dealer.
The fourth prosecutor, Meredith Foster, is involved in a vast bribery and tor lawsuit against a former employee of the New York City Housing Bureau.
Another prosecutor, Mitzi Steiner, worked with Johnson on the female prosecutor who blocked patients and staff from entering the Manhattan reproductive health center. Steiner was also involved in prosecuting people who benefited from the Ghana-based “romance fraud.”
Madison Reddick Smither, the final member of the prosecutor's team, has indicted robbery and fraud cases and recently secured the charges of sex trafficking of a man from the Bronx.
In the months before the trial, prosecutors bristled a public statement by Combs' attorney that they deemed inappropriate. They pushed back when Combs' lead lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, framed the prosecutor in an interview with TMZ as “a successful black takedown.”
And last week they warned the judges in the case to an episode of a podcast where Mark Guerragos, a lawyer who previously represented Combs, commented extensively on the case. Their complaints led to a tense meeting in Judge Arun Subramanian's robbery room, during which the judge warned Geragos by describing the prosecution team as “six pack white women” on a podcast, according to the exchange transcript.
