When the entrepreneur, Ellon Mask, made a headline with his loud comments supporting the H-1B visa program, the subsequent debate focused on his position to the immigration.
However, this debate blurred the reasons why the United States has such a program in the first place. The students in their own country do not have math education.
According to Federal Law, the H-1B program provides visas to foreigners who come to provide “professional” services. Professionals are defined as “theoretically and practical application of highly specialized knowledge” and higher education requirements.
Our “report card” indicates that students are late for reading.
The program is concluded every year with a 65,000 regular H-1B visa for foreigners who have reached advanced degrees from US universities.

Considering the intense support for the mask program, the Federal Report states in 2023 that “computer -related occupations account for 65 % of all beneficiaries (programs).” That is not surprising. In comparison, foreigners in social science were given less than 1 % of H-1B visa.
Many of the reports of the H-1B discussions focuses on the angle of foreign and American workers, but the real problem about H-1B is that the United States has MUSK's SpaceX and the mathematics skills needed. You cannot produce people. Other high -tech companies.
In 2024, 72 % of eight -year students who were evaluated nationwide in education advanced failed in a skilled mathematical examination.
Why are American students doing so bad in mathematics? The answer lies in the instructions of mathematics that they have received.
In the early 2010s, most states adopted Common Core National Education Standards. This was advertised as a treatment for mathematics in the United States. Unfortunately, it turned out that Common Core is a bad medicine.
Common Core has confused many students not only by learning simple mathematical operations, but also by emphasizing indirect methods to reach the correct answer.
For example, the multiplication is often required to draw a picture, not just a memorable table.
Michael Mariony, a California professional mathematics tutor, does not simply proliferate molecules from public schools, compare the denominator to obtain the correct answer, but to get a few rectangles. He said that he was drawn to the shade of the area. It is not inefficient or efficient to ask students to learn mathematics in this way.
Why are American students doing so bad in mathematics? The answer lies in the instructions of mathematics that they have received.
“If you can do them in your head, are you going to draw a picture every time 10 problems occur with a slight multiplication?” Marion asks. “It's insane.”
Marion says, “I have not obtained a gradual guidance early with students who are completely lost.”
Given the experience of Mariony, it is not surprising that the federal government's research has found that the common core has had a major adverse effect on achieving the eighth grader.
The math professor of the university is shocked by the poor skills of student mathematics.
One of Silicon Valley's university mathematics instructors lamented that the lack of algebra knowledge was “number one defect and their chronic.” He said, “We have no different students and graduates that Silicon Valley needs.”

Sugi Solensen, a top engineer at the famous Jet Promotion Research Institute, who teaches mathematics students, said, “Traditional mathematics with basic skills and divisions, subtractions, multiplication, and division. Prompt that the students can do it quickly, accurately and easier. ”
In addition, the mathematics topic must be sequentially “built in a hierarchical way structured on what you have learned earlier.”
Finally, Solensen recommends that mathematics, such as long division, must be explicitly taught and practiced until learning.

There are nearly 50 million K-12 students in the United States. If you use a mathematical teaching method that has been proven instead of a failed progressive technique at school, the need for a H-1B visa will be less due to the large number of young Americans who have the skills needed by companies. Trump's inauguration high -techtitan should rely on school to do it. It's time to make mathematics wonderful again.
