Farmers and ranchers feed the world and save the planet. It is a calling worthy of celebration. But it's time for American agriculture to be honest with itself. For too long, we have settled into the status quo.
With President Donald Trump in office, there was never a better opportunity for producers to increase our success and take advantage of this moment.
The outbreak of bird flu is an agricultural crisis, and the cost of eggs is a nightmare for consumers. Unfortunately, we are in a “breakgrass in case of emergency” situation. And the strategies adopted under the Biden administration are simply not sufficient, leading us to where we are today.

The reaction we saw from President Trump's team is amazing, exactly why I am so optimistic about the future of agriculture in our country. Even in two weeks of work, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins laid out a thoughtful and comprehensive five-point plan that would help guide American producers and families during this period.
The biggest winner and the most lamentable loser from Trump's speech
The plan is a billion-dollar strategy to lower grocery bills and protect farmers.
Increased biosecurity – including the implementation of highly successful pilot programs that have been proven to limit the outbreak. It will help farmers help support the surge in the efforts of cypress beetles.
This is not an overnight fix, but it's a serious plan.

As a farmer and veterinarian who raised the livestock farming business, manage diseases and outbreaks and see them as avian flu – is an important part of the job. These animals are our livelihoods and it is our responsibility to look after them, ensuring we grow and produce the best and safest foods on the market for our consumers.
Protecting American Workers: How Trump's Team Will Deliver His Promise
I want to bet on the farm that this is just the first example of what we see President Trump and Secretary Rollins intend to hit for American farmers and ranchers. They have our backs and listen to our voices. We will see a whole range of smarter, positive policies that will make a huge difference to agriculture and our country.
Washington knows there's a lot to do. Trade imbalances need to be corrected and markets grow. You need to invest in more and better research. Increased input costs need to be stabilized and farm incomes increase. You need to make better plans to combat the outbreak of catastrophic disease. You need to deal with labor shortages. You need to understand how to implement new technologies while protecting your data. It's just the beginning, but I know this administration is ready to kick some butts.

Nebraska's fields and pastures are vast. Approximately 90% of our land is dedicated to farming and ranching. I've seen it firsthand: go to farming, just like the countryside goes. Secretary Rollins believes this and she is our advocate. I have heard she clearly hears the vision of rural economic prosperity and development that goes a long way to give her family and community support.
We need to work with federal partners to help build this roadmap for American agriculture. We know that our possibilities are second to none. We have the best people and abundant water, crops and livestock. With great optimism and new partnerships, leadership and new opportunities this season will lead to a long-term period of wealth and cheap eggs for Americans.
