Stacey London wants you to wear whatever you like.
The fashion expert and entrepreneur, London is best known for his show “What Not Wear,” which he co-hosted with Clinton Kelly at TLC for over a decade. But as she has changed, she has her opinion on style: she no longer wants people to adhere to a certain set of fashion rules.
“Style is about individuals, and it's not about whether you're part of the trend,” said London, 55. “It's about your ingredients, your body, and what you do with your self-expression.”
“What To Wear” ended in 2013, but the co-hosts teamed up again for “With Whating the F You Want You Want.” Instead of rules, it focuses on channeling inner fashion desires. “You may not think this is the best we can do, but did I make you the happiest? Because that's because it's a change in where we were and where we are today as a society,” London said.
In addition to the show, London designs clothing for women who are experiencing the QVC line menopause by Stacey London. “I still love style and still love fashion, but I wear suits and pants. I'm more confident than wearing a skin-fitting pencil skirt and 5-inch heels,” she said.
London moved to a three-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens in 2006. It's full of clothes, art and racks of dinosaur noise.
“I knocked out all the walls, so it's a double loft without a door,” she said. “In the middle of the apartment there is a huge staircase leading to the bedroom and dressing room.”
London shares his home with Dora, an eight-year-old Morkey (Malta Yorkshire Terrier), “a completely vindictive” 8-year-old Mokey (Malta Yorkshire Terrier).
Sleep mode varies depending on what Saturday nights are like, but you can sleep from 10am to 2pm. The bedroom is a tiny dark coco and Dora sleeps with me. I love my sheets and mattress. Sometimes I drink coffee and go back to bed to read. I have a completely different shelf with books written on my reading list and I work them slowly.
I find a treatment that I'm obsessed with salt treatments and sit on their patio. You can go one of two ways: you can do something salty or sweet, or sweet with a salty taste. I can never decide, but I usually start salty and then sweet. Eggs, avocados and hash browns are part of my breakfast, and the gluten-free chocolate chip oatmeal grilled cake is the second. Dora eats them so I always need to order extra eggs. Yes, I'm that person.
I love walking to Dumbo and going to Brooklyn Free. I have found some incredible designer pieces at a truly reasonable price. Something people don't necessarily know is that, like Romeo Gigli, I love the 90s designers. Also, I love Tchotchkes so it could be something like accessories and strange little trinkets you want to put on your shelves. If I'm in Dumbo I'll also go to the Front General Store, which has vintage clothing and jewelry. Walking by the carousel is always fun for Dora. There are many dogs she could attack, but she also loves being by the water.
Perfect fit I have been working with my friend Suleika Jaouad, who I recently went on tour. She doesn't like shopping, she doesn't like styling. She has a great taste, but I don't think she trusts herself enough. So on Sunday, I'm dressed here for her and doing it in my clothes. She would rather wear what she likes.
Coffee Catch-Up I like to go to the bar and bookstore Liz's book bar. It's a lovely atmosphere and I meet my friends there. They are my neighbors and we are trying to make a point to see each other on the weekend. You might order an iced latte or get a bottle of rosé.
Local support I have been at Carol Gardens for a long time and have really seen this area calm down completely overnight. It has been tough seeing many small businesses not accomplishing it since Covid. There are two stores that I love on Court Street, St. Paul Street and Woods Grove. If I'm in the mood to shop, I'll go there.
Takeout time is nothing better than the Han Dynasty. I order a rice noodles fried with green onions, eggs and shredded chicken. The noodles are oily and lined with chili oil. I find it spicy but not salty so I add some salt. Then I literally eat the whole container. Currently I watch “The Jewel of the Righteous”, and I am a scripted TV enthusiast. I see everything scripted.
Housekeepe All I have to do to close the Sunday is what I will experience throughout my week. I look at my calendar and coordinate with my assistant and with the housekeeper who takes care of Dora while on the trip. I'm so overwhelmed by so much information, frankly, a lot is happening right now with my new show promotion. I have the best assistant in the world – she seems to be my other half.
My scrubs and polishing (what I call skincare and teeth polishing) can take me around 40 minutes to do my routine. Dora goes, sleeps in her little anti-anxiety bed, then goes downstairs. I usually sleep in front of her downstairs, and I wait for the small pitter putter on her feet before I turn off the light so she can wake up in bed too.
