“The International Cycling Union (UCI) and the organizing committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para Cycling Road World Championships in Zurich (Switzerland) today announced the tragic news of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Ferrer. “It is with great regret that we learned of this,” the statement began.

According to the UCI, Farrar suffered a “serious fall” during Thursday's race and suffered “serious head injuries.” She was taken to hospital by helicopter in critical condition and died the next day at Zurich University Hospital.

Farrar was competing in a junior women's event on wet and slippery roads when she crashed in a wooded area south of Zurich. Police and the public prosecutor's office are investigating the accident.
Farrer's death becomes the second Swiss cyclist to die in an accident in the past two seasons. Gino Maeder, 26, died in June 2023 after falling into a ravine during the Tour de Suisse.
