The Vancouver Canucks woke up during a game against the Dallas Star on Wednesday night, and Western Conference opponents paid the price.
The star had already won a playoff spot and was hoping to catch the Winnipeg jet first in the central division. The Canucks, who had already had playoff hopes on the ropes, were set to hit a major obstacle in another defeat.

Vancouver tracked 5-2 and had one minute left in the third term. For some reason, their fate changed quite quickly.
Aatu Raty made it a two-goal game past Casey Desmith. After a while, Pius Starr put more pressure on Dallas with his goals. Suter followed up with another score with seven seconds left in the regulations.
That's how the game was tied up.
Vancouver's momentum continued to build up during overtime, and nearly four minutes after the extra frame, Kiefer Sherwood scored the 18th goal of the season to give the Canucks a victory. Sherwood took a pass from Conner Garland from behind the net and delivered the game-winning goal.
The Canucks won 6-5.
“We're saying a lot about the group,” Sherwood said. “'Gar' just played crazy. Feel like slow motion, raise your head and place it on tape. ”

Vancouver became the first NHL team to score three times in the final minute of regulation. Each score came on the ice without a goalkeeper.
“It needs to be there,” Vancouver coach Rick Totchet said. “I obviously loved fighting in the third season, and doing that is a character victory for a lot of people, for the team.
“My son texted me. “You looked like the third team last year.”
The Canucks won the Pacific Division last year, but are almost completely eliminated from playoff competition. The team was 36-29-13, with 85 points.
The star is four points behind the Jets at the top spot in the central division.
Star captain Jamie Ben called the loss “unacceptable.”

“The game was supposed to be closing,” Ben said. “We should have found a way to get it there.”
