After pitching to an ERA of 2.98 in 2023, Chiga missed the first half due to a torn muscle in the posterior shoulder of his pitching shoulder and started the season on the disabled list. The 31-year-old returned on July 26, but suffered a calf strain in the sixth inning of that game.
However, at the time, coach Carlos Mendoza did not rule out sending Chiga to the postseason.
“If we can see him pitch, that means we're in a good spot, right?” Mendoza said.
They certainly are, coming off a miraculous win Thursday night.

Mets give Pete Alonso's home run a standing ovation after making a viral call on the airwaves
In the top of the 9th inning, leading 2-0, with two outs and a loss, Pete Alonso threw a ball to the opposing field, and the ball went over the right-field wall, giving New York a 3-2 lead. and caused havoc in the dugout and on the basepaths. . They got the insurance money again, holding on for a 4-2 win and advancing to the wild card series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Alonso's outburst was the first in MLB history by a player when his team was trailing after the ninth inning of a winner-take-all postseason game, according to OPTA statistics.
For the Mets, the miraculous victory felt like deja vu. It was just three days after they fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the eighth inning and a 7-6 deficit in the ninth to clinch a postseason berth in the first game of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves.
