They did it again.
After a 72-hour marathon vote to line up the GOP Caucus, President Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump worked together to pass “one big beautiful bill.”
This is a major and historic hurdle that will be a legislative product of President Trump's second term.
From the beginning, the Washington political class scoffed and chuckled at Johnson's commitment to providing the bill by Memorial Day weekend. Almost every day, Beltway media declared the coalition of time frames and Johnson speakers as fragile, in time for such an ambitious deadline.
Mike Johnson, President Trump wins “big and beautiful” as budget passes through the home
Certainly, past efforts to advance marquee laws like this have not moved this very quickly early in the presidency. Former President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act did not clarify Congress until his second year. The Affordable Care Act was signed 14 months into President Obama's term. Even Trump's tax cuts in 2017 came together in late December.
But President Trump and Speaker Johnson are a scary team. More than a year ago, Chairman Johnson was convinced that Trump would return to the White House and Republicans would take control of Congress. So Johnson began his plan. He was wisely prepared by a unified government to unlock the integration process. This is a budget manipulation that allows key fiscal laws to pass the Senate with a simple majority vote.

Johnson's plans paid off a great deal of time. He set up a working group more than six months before the election and moved quickly to frontload the legislative process. This allowed him and House Republicans to hit the ground running at the start of the 119th Congress. Thursday's successful vote is a testament to Johnson's foresight and his fortitude.
Of course, President Trump's involvement was important for ultimate success. The president repeatedly overtured the ideological hardliners and centristic holdouts. Blue State Moderates pushed to secure transactions on state and local tax credits (salt), among other things, but House Freedom Caucus sought guarantees on reducing the deficit. President Trump held multiple, hourly meetings at the White House. And in a sprint to the finish line, the president made an unusual trip to Capitol Hill before the vote. This was a well-meaning gesture to show his support, and of course, a gesture to hold the fence nurse's feet down to fire.
It was all important to the passage of the bill. Presidents Trump and Johnson have been able to keep this historically small, unruly GOP meeting on track. They skillfully managed conflicting concerns from within the party. The Saber Ratling continued until the last hour. In the end, Trump and Johnson never blinked.

Johnson ideally complements Trump's tough approach to trading in many ways. President Trump thrives in conflict, and Johnson is systematic and reflective. The friendly, young speaker is thoughtful and pensive. He really cares and is interested in the concerns of his colleagues. These traits are rooted in his deep Christian faith.

They are the exact features that have won him a reservoir of goodwill on him at a GOP meeting that many of his predecessors have never enjoyed. This helps him exercise small gave in one of the thinnest majority in American history.
As Rep. Richard Hudson said after the vote, “He's not like any speaker I worked with. I knew Bohner. I knew Paul Ryan. There's the real thing… there's the humility.
This goodwill has been translated into a series of legislative victory. Under Johnson's leadership, House Republicans recorded victory after victory, from national security supplements to successive government funding bills, to High Stakes House budget resolutions that set the stage for a big, beautiful bill. With over 28 non-party line votes in the House, he received only three exiles. This is a truly amazing feat at the GOP of Homes today.

President Trump has dominated the national political scene for over a decade. Johnson is and will remain the president's strongest ally in Congress. Together, they are America's most frightening team.
Republicans still have much to do to get “one big beautiful bill” signed into law. The Senate will undoubtedly test Johnson's speech further.
But this week he proves that Johnson is a man for now. This week proved he is one of the most effective speakers in American history.
