President Donald Trump's tariffs are already the biggest middle class tax hike in modern history, raising prices he has promised to lower. And even more tariffs threaten an economy that has already become astounding from the uncertainty generated by Trump's volatile policies, attacks on the rule of law and threatening statements.
Adding further injuries to the injury, Trump and his Magazine allies forced the “Big Beautiful Bill Act” through the House of Representatives by one vote. Their divisive and financially unhealthy approach will be trillions in tax cuts to undermine new debt for us, our children and grandchildren, due to the super-rich and catastrophic reductions in basic health care and food services. Worse, shortly after the bill was passed, Trump proudly announced tariffs that would increase jobs and cost on his allies and iPhones.
When he ran for president in 2024, Trump assured us that inflation would “end soon” and that we would feel prices were falling on “day 1.” For millions of swing voters in 2024 (the crucial vote block in the election), that was the overall point of choosing him. But now prices are high, economic growth is declining, and life is more difficult than when Trump took the job vow in January.
Elon Musk “disappointed” by Trump's spending bill, says it undermines what Doge is doing
Since the day of the inauguration, consumer sentiment has plunged into a historic low. Moody's has downgraded its American credit rating for the first time in over 100 years. Ford and Walmart are raising prices due to customs duties.
Now, instead of taking off our economy like a “rocket ship”, as he has promised, Trump is killing it in his lover's tax deal for his friend in Marlago. Promising to stand up to its establishment, the president is to effectively wash out taxpayer money and undermine middle-class families and American businesses by lining up his own preferred elite silk pockets.
Now, the American economy, which clearly outperformed every other country on Earth when Donald Trump took over, is lagging behind in ways that have not lasted for decades.
Billionaire tax hikes in Trump's “big and beautiful bill”
Special tax gifts, such as amortization to buy a private jet, are paid by disrupting the biggest Medicaid cuts in history, higher health insurance premiums, and food programs for distressed working families. They put the remaining price tags on their country's credit cards, add trillions to their debts, and increase the costs of their home, car or student loans.
In communities across the country, tariffs are crushing supply chains and freeing employment decisions. Port traffic is sporadic, with retailers warning empty shelves in stores.
In North Carolina, Trump's tariffs are punishing manufacturers who claim he's supporting, killing jobs and reducing US exports. When the Greenville-based manufacturer was on the crisis of renovating the factory, adding 25 new jobs, the equipment they needed to expand was hit by new tariffs. The manufacturer said, “We have worked for many years to install state-of-the-art manufacturing lines at our North Carolina plants. Unfortunately, today's tariffs make shipping this line to the US uneconomical.”

Michigan has a car factory and its suppliers taking the brunt of its brunt. And it's not just cars and trucks. Murray in Ferndale, Michigan sells baby supplies to growing families in the community. They say their business is on the ropes as 80% of their industry is sourced from China. They are concerned that the prices of customers are out of reach or that the product is not available at all.
This magazine agenda comes at the expense of basic financial security for the average American. Tariffs take them away their purchasing power and their work. Billion dollar cuts in Medicaid and Medicare. Millions of health insurance have been cancelled. Snap, the national food relief program, is starving. Trump's tax cuts come straight from programs that help the poorest people in society.
Meanwhile, cost-cutting policies, which create bipartisan chips and duties such as energy and manufacturing policies in science and inflation reduction laws, are meaninglessly undermined.
Whether you're a Detroit autoworker or a soy farmer in Senate majority leader John Tune's South Dakota home town, Americans are getting worse than in January.

As Republicans and Democrats who worked on behalf of the presidents of both parties, we agree that most people's lives will suffer unless they face higher inflation, slower growth and disability debt. That's why we recently helped launch the Cost Coalition, a bipartisan campaign aimed at telling a real story about the fight for America's dreams.
We want to showcase people outside of Washington, do a good job, put food on the table, get kids off the ground and give back to the community. From small business owners to faith leaders, veterans and military families, we believe America can get back on track if Washington focuses on kitchen table issues.
