According to federal safety regulators, liquid egg replacements sold under two popular brand names have been recalled.
Cargill Kitchen Solutions in Lake Odessa, Michigan recalls an approximately 212,268 pounds of product under the label Egg Beater and Bob Evans. It was mentioned on March 28th because they could contain a washing solution containing sodium hypochlorite, also known as bleached salts.
The product was shipped for distribution in Ohio and Texas and for food service in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois and Iowa.
“The product could be distributed nationwide,” the agency said.
Cargill Kitchen Solutions did not respond immediately to inquiries on Sunday, but in telephone records regarding the recall, the company said it was voluntary.
“We issued this recall from a wealth of caution as some products may contain undeclared low sodium chlorate,” the company said.
The Food Safety Inspection Bureau said it received hints with potential contamination of the product with bleach, sometimes sodium hypochlorite.
“After investigating and conducting a thorough evaluation of the cleaning solution contents, FSIS scientists either concluded that the use of this product should not cause adverse health effects or the risks are negligible, resulting in a Class III recall.
The agency also said the health risks for consumers were relatively low and there were no reports of side effects. “Anyone who is worried about illness should contact their healthcare provider,” the agency said.
They warned customers not to consume potentially contaminated products and to throw away purchased products or return them to the store where they purchased them.
Liquid egg products were produced on March 12th and 13th, 2025, with the label G1804 carried in a carton.
The recall came as consumers were looking for egg replacements due to prices and shortages in supermarkets around the country. Recalls also come from the possibility that avian influenza may be contaminated amidst polluting of poultry and cattle outbreaks in the US.
Egg prices have been declining recently, but cost concerns continue, and many consumers are becoming creative by finding alternatives such as liquid egg products.
