The Dodgers left-handed pitcher was coming off a regular season in which he became the first unanimous National League Cy Young Award winner in history.
Koufax not only won the Cy Young Award in 1963, but was also named National League MVP. The man known as “God's left arm'' pitched 311 innings during the regular season, posting a record of 25 wins, 5 losses, an ERA of 1.88, and 20 complete games.
So was Koufax in the World Series against the Yankees. Koufax pitched a complete game in Game 1, striking out 15 batters, giving the Dodgers a 5-2 victory and setting the record for most strikeouts in a World Series game at the time.
